昨日と今日、川越祭りがあるというので見に行った。毎年、行きたいと思っていたが、ここ２年はコロナで開催中止だったし、それ以前は気づいた時には終わっていたため、今回が初めてであった。川越は東村山駅から乗り換えなしで３０分で行ける。川越は小江戸と言われる通り、昔からの蔵や街並みが残っているので度々訪れている。これまでの町の感じは、小江戸の雰囲気は多少あるものの、何かアンバランスでちぐはぐな感じであった。が、今回の祭りを見て、そのちぐはぐ観は解消した。祭りによって、これまでしぼんでいるように見えていた古い蔵や商家が生き生きとし、歴史の重みと誇りを感じたのである。街の人々も祭で元気になり、生き生きとしているようである。また、祭りの意味と役割、重要性をあらためて思い知らされた次第である。祭りは人を元気にし、他人を集め、街に活気を与えるようだ。山車は車付の台車に二層の鉾を組み、その上に人形を乗せている。山車の中では笛、太鼓、鉦のお囃子に合わせて狐、おかめ、タヌキなどのお面をつけた踊りや獅子舞が披露される。ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されているだけあって圧巻である。山車は２０台ほどあるようだが、今回はその半分しか見る事ができなかったので、次回は残りを見たいと思っている。
Kawagoe Festival
The Kawagoe Festival was held yesterday and today, so I went to see it. I wanted to go every year, but the last two years were canceled due to the coronavirus, and before that, it was over before I knew it, so this was my first time. Kawagoe, as it is called Little Edo, has old storehouses and townscapes, so I have visited many times. The feeling of the town so far has been somewhat unbalanced and inconsistent, although it has a little atmosphere of Koedo. However, after seeing this festival, that misunderstanding disappeared. Through the festival, the old storehouses and merchant houses that had seemed withered until now came to life, and I felt the weight and pride of history. Festivals seem to cheer people up, bring people together, and revitalize the city.
